ANCIENT PORT OF FARFA. Recovery and re-functionalization of one of the ancient river ports of the Abbey of Farfa on the Tiber. With Vania Gianese, Fabio Morgante.

A contemporary addition to a historic rural complex of outstanding historical and environmental value

The provinces of Rieti and Rome have promoted an ambitious project for the navigability of the middle Tiber valley between Nazzano and Magliano Sabina. The river will be served by a navigable tourist line with moorings at the most significant environmental and historical spots.

This is the case of the ancient port of the Abbey of Farfa, on which stood an imposing building, probably a grain warehouse, in a state of disrepair. The building stood on the ridge of an embankment overlooking a large floodplain area.
The restoration and recovery project had to respond to the problem of the accessibility of three distinct levels: that of the large entrance hall, that of the underground services and that of the river bank, reachable thanks to the new lift incorporated in a cylindrical walled volume, reminiscent of the agricultural sili common in the neighbouring countryside.

A specially calibrated lime finishing gives the masonries a chromatic unity which blends them harmoniously into the landscape.
